Dewey Street Project - Mar Vista, CA
Greenwald Construction Co.
of Long Beach, CA

In this project, we were in charge of the exterior (wrapping, eaves, door and window trim, stone wainscott, siding, column warpping, moulding) and interior finish (doors and moulding).
Pictures can be enlarged by clicking them!
We arrived on this project after it was framed and the roof applied. Insulation was in and rough utilities were installed. The challenges on this job were numerous, including framing ideosyncrasies (missing blocking, studs for backing, unsheared walls, door jamb mishaps, un-flush surfaces to attach to, and others), access issues (no scaffolding at first), and no documentation on what the finished product was to look like, just ad-hoc design as- you -go decisions.

With some input from the client and general contractor, designs were created and the project moved forward.

A quazi-before photo: these shots were taken after the eaves were covered with shiplap, and the building covered with Tyvek. Trim was being applied at this time on the outside, and preperations made for applying the stone wainscoting.

The front door had not arrived so we worked around it until we made a jamb for the door. Other doors came later.

Placing siding is a long and arduous task - made of composite concrete, it takes diamond grinding wheels and special shears to cut profiles around window trim, pipes, etc. Not forgiving - if you cut too much, it's reused for a smaller piece elsewhere. Blind nailed and glued from the back side over each nail with elastomeric to hold it to the previous lap.

The stone work was trying as well. We had to calculate the start of the siding level first and transfer that line all around the house with a laser level. The stone went on before the siding was started and we had to be sure the lines would match up with a full width row over the stone water table. The stone is a natural green color epoxied together in small sections. It fits together like a puzzle with some adjusments for imperfect dimensions (some too wide, too small, etc.). Stemwalls had to be floated out to match the plane for the house sheeting before we could apply the stone.

More pictures coming of the final siding install, interior doors and moulding.
